December is when the most people are looking for something to buy, and also when the most people start selling. The winner isn't whoever sells the most original thing, but whoever picks something easy to give, prices it well and knows at the end what was left over.
Here are the ideas that fit the season best, what to watch for with each and the math to do before you buy stock.
Ideas for what to sell at Christmas
| What to sell | Why it works | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Handmade candles and soaps | Easy to give without knowing someone's tastes | That the packaging looks finished |
| Cookies, candy and chocolate | Impulse buys that sell out fast | Expiry dates and any permits the venue asks for |
| Gift baskets and boxes | They solve the whole gift | That assembly doesn't eat your profit |
| Personalized items | Mugs, ornaments or keychains with a name don't compete on price | Timing: take orders early |
| Costume jewelry and accessories | Small, easy to carry and good margin | Display them so they show from afar |
| Christmas decorations | People buy them from November | Leftovers sit in storage for a year |
| Seasonal clothing | Sweaters and pajamas are popular gifts | Sizes: that's where stock gets stuck |
How to choose what to sell
- It can be given as a gift. Ask yourself whether someone would bring it to a gift exchange without explaining it.
- You can get more. If it sells out the first weekend, you need to restock before Christmas.
- It leaves margin after all your costs. Stall rent, packaging and card fees come out of it too.
- December 26 doesn't scare you. What says “Christmas” on it won't sell in January. Start small and restock if it moves.

How to work out your selling price
The most common mistake is pricing by looking at the stall next door. First add up what each piece really costs: the product, packaging, shipping and the fee if you take cards. Then work out the profit you want on top of that cost.

Where to sell at Christmas
- At a Christmas market. It has the most people ready to buy, but it's also the most expensive. Book your spot early.
- Over WhatsApp. No rent, and customers who already know you. What you need is a catalog that's easy to send.
- Among friends and at your office. Take orders ahead of time and buy only what you've already sold.

Log every sale to know what you made
A good weekend feels the same whether you made money or just moved it around. The only way to know is to write down what you sold, for how much and what you spent. It also tells you what to order for the next market.
