How it works

Your price has to cover everything before it leaves you anything

The most common pricing mistake is adding a percentage to what something cost you and calling it a day. That way you forget shipping, the bag, the card fee and the tax, and the profit you thought you had quietly shrinks by half.

This calculator starts from the other end: you decide how much of the price you want to keep, and it finds the price that, after paying for everything, leaves you exactly that.

How do you work out a product's selling price?

Add up everything it costs you to sell one piece (what you paid for it, shipping and packaging) and divide it by the part of the price that isn't profit. If you want 40% of the price to be profit, divide by 0.60. If you take cards or charge VAT (sales tax), you have to take those out too, and that's what this calculator does.

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is how much of the PRICE is profit. Markup is how much you ADD to what it cost you. If something cost you $100 and you sell it for $150, your markup is 50%, but your margin is 33%: of the $150, $50 is profit. That's why a “50% profit” markup leaves you less than it seems.

How do I price products I resell from a catalog?

The same way: your cost is what you pay for the piece, after the discount the company gives you. Add what it costs you to deliver it and pick your margin. If the suggested price is higher than the catalog price, that product doesn't earn you what you're after.

Do I have to include VAT in my price?

It depends on your tax situation, and your accountant can tell you. In Mexico VAT (IVA) is 16%. If you charge it, tick the box: the calculator adds it to the price and reminds you that money isn't yours.
